5 Alternative Ways to Use a Quilt Block

Quilts are an incredibly versatile type of embroidery design that allow you to not only create a beautiful quilt, but a whole range of other projects with a little creativity and know-how! In this article, we show you 5 different ways you can use a quilt block that isn't turning it into a quilt.

1. Applique on Clothes

Perhaps one of our favourite ways to use quilt blocks not in a quilt at Sweet Pea HQ! We have done this with so many designs, but most recently used Block 6 of the Monster Dance Quilt, which features a howling wolf, on the back of a denim shirt!

2. Coasters

This one is easy but a great way to use blocks that didn't quite work out when testing colours or fabrics! We have a blog and video on this that goes through the steps - it's a really easy way to upcycle and not let your hard work go to waste.

3. Cushions or Hangers

For quilts where there is a scene or a set of blocks that only work together, there's still room for creativity! It could be a set of four blocks or a floating quilt, whatever it is, they can also easily become a new couch cushion or hanger. See how we did just that with the Jungle Floating Quilt and the Pirate Adventure Quilt became a little baby block (not quite a cushion, but same idea!).

4. Zipper Purse

Whether it's a square or rectangular block, a zipper purse is a great way to transform a quilt into something totally new! While it will require some sewing machine work, unlike our more simple hoop-only zipper purses, if you are comfortable with a sewing machine, it's simple! Just use the blocks like fabric - but a bit more special!

5. Borders as Bookmarks

This isn't strictly a quilt block, it often comes with quilts, especially our Block of the Week or Month mystery quilts so I have added it in as a bonus! Rectangular border blocks are perfect for bookmarks and can be transformed similarly to coasters - another great way to use those "throwaway" border blocks that may not have worked out the way you wanted.
