Save Our Stitching! How to Put Your Work Back in the Hoop

save our stitching sweet pea studio

Sometimes, you need to reposition your fabric to complete your design accurately, and sometimes, it just happens by accident! Either way, getting it back in place involves careful alignment, stabilisation, and registration to ensure your work stays precise. This video and blog guide explains how to reinsert your work into a hoop if it has been taken out prematurely or shifted.

1. Prepare Stabiliser

Use tear-away stabiliser to support your fabric during re-hooping as it can be removed easily after completing the stitching.

2. Re-hooping the Fabric

Place your fabric on top of the new stabiliser, aligning it with the hoop. If the fabric was trimmed or shifted, find the original position.

3. Establish Registration Lines

For blocks without a built-in square or registration marks, you can create your own. Registration lines mark key points, such as the position of the letter "A" or other design elements.

4. Re-stitch Outer Square

Return the machine to the beginning of your work. Stitch the outer square to secure the fabric again. This square acts as a guide for proper placement.

5. Aligning the Design

If no square exists, manually align your work using registration lines. Lay the fabric on top of the stitched lines, matching corners and edges. Be aware of potential shrinkage from pressing or fabric tension.

6. Adjust and Centralize

Use the board or a flat surface to fine-tune the position. Find the outer lines and transfer them onto the fabric corners. Slight stretching may be necessary to fit the design perfectly.

7. Final Placement and Stitching

Once aligned, place the fabric back into the hoop. Proceed with top stitching or the next embroidery step. Check the placement visually and adjust if needed.

Tips for Success

  • Use registration lines
  • Be gentle with fabric to avoid distortion during repositioning.
  • Check for shrinkage and press fabric beforehand to minimise.
  • Use a flat surface for precise alignment.
  • You don't have to restart - repositioning saves time and effort.

Re-embedding your work into the hoop is a valuable skill that saves time and materials. With patience, proper stabilisation, and registration techniques, you can correct mistakes or adjust your design without starting over. Practice these steps to improve your quilting and embroidery projects, ensuring professional-looking results every time.
