We have lots of designs where PVC is a wonderful addition, but we often get asked what is the best PVC to use? This short blog goes through the type of PVC we usually use and why!
We recommend choosing a PVC which is between 0.3mm to 0.75mm thick (approx. between 12-30 gauge). The vinyl should be flexible and pliable – you can test it by folding a corner and finger-pressing the crease and if a cloudy bruise appears, the vinyl may not be suitable for a satin stitch finish.
In the designs you see on the Sweet Pea website, we use 20 Gauge PVC. This is approximately 2/3 of a credit card’s thickness or 0.50mm (20 Mil) 0.02" (1/50).
This Clear Vinyl is often used in porch enclosures, table coverings, bulletin board covers, shower curtains, furniture covers, art projects, tent windows, and purses. When it comes to embroidery, the heavier weight works best for satin stitched edges, pockets, and applique windows.
When sewing, we use a standard size 75/11 embroidery needle, however, if you are using a thicker PVC, we suggest a larger needle (denim needle size 16/100). It is still important to slow down your machine for the satin stitch edge as well.
In many of our designs, PVC is an optional embellishment. For projects that include windows, there’s often the choice to use PVC or an alternative like mesh. In designs where the PVC is purely decorative, it’s included as a step you can easily skip if you prefer.
We hope this helps in your next Sweet Pea adventure!
