How to Use an Applique Mat

how to use applique mat blog

Our Sweet Pea Essentials Appliqué Mat measures 40cm x 60cm (15.75" x 23.5"). This appliqué mat will protect the surface of your iron and ironing board from that sticky fusible residue, as well as the item you are ironing or pressing.

Use it to lay out your applique in no time in conjunction with your Sweet Pea Essentials lightboard. You will never have trouble transferring those applique designs onto your background again. Check out our great tutorial video below.

Perfect for all iron-on items, this sheet is much easier to use than trusting a thin scrap of fabric to protect the surface of your iron and makes ironing and other applications smooth and easy. Simply lay it over your pieces to appliqué making sure that the sticky surface of your fusible webbing is facing the Appliqué Mat.

Clean the appliqué mat by simply rubbing over the surface of the mat with a wet wipe to rub off the sticky residue as required.

Our Sweet Pea Appliqué mats are ideal for appliqué, fusible webbing, or in fact just about any heat activated or glue work.

Step 1:

Print your pattern layout and place it under the applique mat. Optional: use a lightboard behind the applique mat to see the pattern even clearer.

The pattern will show through very easily, even though there is a grid. The grid is there to stop the glue from oozing out of the edges when we are pressing using a fusible web.

Step 2:

Use the lines showing from the layout underneath the lightboard to place our pieces of fabric on top. The mat is slightly tacky so the fabric doesn’t actually move.

Step 3:

Overlay with the centre piece. Once we have laid down all the individual applique pieces, this centre piece welds all the pieces together nicely.

Step 4:

Place a pressing surface underneath (Ironing Board or Mat).

Step 5:

Press the pieces together with an iron, just using a light steam. Just enough to make a bond

Step 6:

Once the fabrics are cool we can just peel them off the mat.

Step 7:

We can position this onto our fabric using the template and lightboard.

The great thing about the applique mat is the way the mat can stop the fabric from shifting because of its tacky nature. It means we can build our designs very consistently. We can build a design to put it onto darker background fabric where we may not see the layout even using a lightboard. It also saves us from trying to transfer the outlines for our design onto our darker fabric, as we can actually build it on the mat and then transfer it straight onto the fabric.
